Here
are the facts on what the Harris government wants to do to teachers and
the
education system in Ontario by ramming Bill 160 through the Legislature:
- The government wants
a further $1 billion cut out of public education. This,
it states, is non-negotiable;
- The government
is taking away bargaining rights for teachers in such areas
as class size, pupil/teacher ratio, preparation time, seniority and all
staffing clauses
- The government
proposes to limit bargaining to salary and benefit issues;
- The government
wants to hire unqualified teachers for traditional teaching
position such as in the library and technological areas;
- The government
proposes to eliminate the standard form of teacher
contract;
- The government
is taking control of all education taxes, rather than letting the
decision be made locally.
